PARADE OF STARS

A look at the Limousin bull Trial over the years and some of the stars

A “BETTER WAY” to prove and choose a bull.

The idea of a bull trial for Limousin bulls came from Murray McQuoid.  He felt that there must be a better way to improve the availability of bulls which after purchase could be confidently moved into the hill country; bulls which would get on with the job they were bred for without suffering setbacks and loss of weight.

The Central North Island Limousin Breeders spent time and effort seeking expert advice and designing a suitable format for the first trial which commenced in 1993 on the N.Z. Dairy Company farm at Te Rapa.

Right from the start interest was high and at the first sale some very good prices were paid for top bulls.  The Trial then moved to Oliver farm at Hinuera. Thence to Tawanui, Hewitts, McKenzies, Needhams and Limax.  In order to better present the scope and status of this project from 1997 it became known as a National Trial but was still run by the then C.N.I. group (now North Island Limousin Breeders Inc..).

The basic philosophy has remained the same; a group of animals of similar age, farmed together under a commercial regime and fed where possible only grass.  If necessary silage or hay has been fed but never hard feed
The bulls arrive shortly after weaning and after a settling in period are weighed to monitor their growth and give owners some feedback. Progress reports are distributed in Newsletters and posted on websites. A limited amount of strategic drenching is carried out.  In recent years intakes have been a little later. Not ideal but  better than  no trial.
The bulls are  screened in Nov/Dec and pre-sale in June for any faults   They are usually scanned for fat cover and eye muscle, then scrotal measurements are taken and final weights are recorded.

Below is a sample of the bulls sold at North Island Bull Trial sales over the years
